It has been a chilly winter so far here in SA but that has not deterred Slow Food South Australia from spreading the message at some wonderful Community events. We also have some great activities coming up during the last months of winter and to celebrate the arrival of Spring, more details at the end of this news article.

World Environment Day at the Adelaide Farmer’s Market
We kicked off on the 4th of June, with a cooking demonstration from Rosa Matto and Kane Pollard. The event was held at the Adelaide Farmer’s Market for World Environment Day and hosted by Mandy Hall. From peels to stems and bones to weeds, the team showcased how to make the most of our produce, not only reducing waste and our impact on the environment as consumers, but also saving money. Download the recipes here.

Prospect Library ‘Meet the Maker’ Fermentation with Mandy Hall
On July 13th, Prospect Library hosted committee member & fermenting icon Mandy Hall for the next in the series of their ‘Meet the Maker’ sessions, this time on Fermentation.

Guests learnt to make a simple ferment, Curtido, while hearing from Mandy about how her passion for fermenting grew. She spoke about the basic principles of fermentation, how to do it safely, and the multitude of different types. An ancient food practice, it is not only a method of preservation and beneficial to gut health, fermenting also unlocks a unique flavour from foods that cannot be recreated without!
